By the end of the week you need to read chapters 1-5 in Hatchet, post your response to the question, reply to my post on your response, and comment on two other group member's posts.
We talked about the items we would want in a survival kit if we were stranded in the wilderness, but Brian has to use his skills of observation to take stock of his surroundings. Record what Brian finds as he checks out his possessions. Predict how he might use each possession to help him survive.
Brian finds a lake and realizes he has his hatchet. I think he will use his hachet to build a shelter, skin an animal, and carve a wepon. He will most likely use the lake to give drinking water and catch fish for food.
ReplyDeleteNick,
DeleteI think that carving a shelterskin is a really interesting answer. I guess carving weapons is good too because it would be hard to catch food with a hatchet.
-Jonni
Thank you Jonn, I thought that a canteen is a important answer because water is important for survival.
DeleteNick,
DeleteDo you think Brian will just eat fish or do you think he will be able to catch other kinds of animals? What about eating plants?
-Miss Tate
Brian will be able to catch other animals and find berries because he is becoming more aware of his enviroment and realizing he will not be picked up right away.
DeleteBrian crashes in a lake and will probebly fish and drink from it he also has his hatchet so he will probebly collect firewood and kill animals and skin animals he also might live in a tree for a while.
ReplyDeleteI think collecting firewood and using a tree for shelter could be something Brian may do because both ideas are clever.
Delete-Nick
I wonder if Brian was in scouts? When I was in scouts we often went camping and learned how to pitch a tent and make a fire. What skills have you learned that would help you to survive in the woods?
Delete-Miss Tate
(Don't forget to sign your post!)
I watch tons of survival tv shows so I know a lot on making fire cooking food and relying on what materials I have -Joey
DeleteI don`t watch any survival shows, but I am super smart when it comes to animals and the wild.
Delete-Nick
Brian finds:
ReplyDelete1) a hatchet
2) a broken watch
3) some money
I think that he will kill a bird with his hatchet so that he can eat it. For a fire he might magnify the sun with his watch.
-Jonni
These ideas are intereasting to me because magnifying the sun could start a small fire witch Brian may use to cook the bird if he catches one.
Delete-Nick
Jonni, that is a great idea to use the watch to magnify the sun. This would really help out with building a fire. How would having a fire change things for Brian?
Delete-Miss Tate
How will he kill a bird because birds fly so the only time you can kill one is while it is in a nest and it will hear you climbing the tree
Delete-Claire
Jonni,we both pretty much have the same ideas for what Brian could do in the woods with his possessions. Great minds think alike!
Delete-Mackenzie
Brian finds his hatchet, a broken watch, a quarter, three dimes, a nickel, two pennies, a folded up twenty dollar bill, a finger nail clipper. He might use his broken watch to start a fire by using it to magnifiy the sun. He might use his hatchet to kill an animal and then he could use the fire to cook it. With his hatchet he could collect fire wood to build shelter and carve weapons such as a bow and arrow. With his money he might run into someone with food so he might give them some money for food.
ReplyDelete-Mackenzie
You mentioned that Brian might run into someone in the woods. Do you think the plane crashed somewhere near a town or where people are living?
Delete-Miss Tate
No, because the plane didn't seem to travel very far, but he said he was just going to wait until the engine ran out of fuel. Maybe someone was on a hunting trip or camping out in the wilderness. I can't wait to read the rest of the story and find out what happens!
Delete-Mackenzie
He could use the hatchet to kill animals and maybe even the watch to make somthing and maybe if he thought he wouldnt use the $20 bill when he got home he could make a fire by rubbing wood together and since money is paper he could throw it in ther to make the fire bigger.
ReplyDelete-Claire
What are some other tools or materials that Brian could use to start a fire?
Delete- Miss Tate
Claire I like your idea about using the twenty dollar bill to start a fire. At first I was thinking why would you throw money in a fire? Then I read it again and understood that to make the fire bigger he would have to have some kind of paper.I would have never thought to burn the money to make the fire bigger. Nice job!
Delete-Mackenzie
He could use his hatchet to cut the wood for a fire, or he could put leaves in it, and he could put rocks around it so it didn't spread. He could also put anything that isn't liquid or that is a wood or paper product. Maybe he could use animal skin too.
